Toyota Material Handling transforms production operations with Ericsson Private 5G

Toyota Material Handlingโ€™s major production complex in Columbus, Indiana, U.S., is enjoying increased productivity, faster deliveries to customers and boosted employee morale since the operational launch of a private 5G network at the facility, designed and installed by Ericsson (NASDAQ: ERIC) and channel partner, STEP.

Toyota Material Handling management reported the benefits following the decision to replace on-site Wi-Fi solutions with Ericsson private 5G products and solutions, including the indoor-connectivity-focused Radio Dot System. Business-critical operations at the almost 200,000 square feet warehouse are now run exclusively over the on-site 5G private network leveraging CBRS spectrum, with no disruptions or connectivity loss reported since its operational launch in November of 2023.

Nubis Adds New Investors to Accelerate Volume Ramp of ML/AI Optics

Nubis Communications, Inc. announced today it has accepted additional strategic investors, bringing total investment in the company to over $50 million. The company emerged from stealth in February 2023 with the first optical engine optimized from the ground up for the demanding requirements of Machine Learning and Artificial Intelligence (ML/AI) cluster interconnect. Nubis recently welcomed new investors Ericsson Ventures and TDK Ventures to accelerate Nubisโ€™ transition to high volume manufacturing in 2024.

Nubisโ€™ technology enables a new class of high-density optical inter-connect (HDI/O) supporting full-duplex edge I/O edge densities in the 1 Tbps/mm range, very low power at 6 pJ/bit or less and standard operation in Linear Drive mode enabling the elimination of optical DSPs, saving latency, cost and power. With Large Language Model sizes growing 1,000x over the past 3 years to 175 billion parameters in GPT-3 and now to over 1.5 trillion parameters in GPT-4, data center operators are struggling to build ML/AI networks large enough to perform training and inference on these models. To support the growth of these very large ML/AI clusters, which are projected to grow from 1K xPUs to 64K over the next few years, much of the interconnect inside the data center will become optical. Nubis optics create distance-independence, connecting multiple cards within a rack and multiple pods across the datacenter, so they perform as if all the processors are on the same card.

Einride Completes Historic Autonomous Vehicle Pilot on U.S. Public Road With GE Appliances

Freight mobility technology company Einride successfully completed a public road pilot of Einrideโ€™s autonomous, electric vehicle, in Selmer, Tennessee. After receiving the first U.S. approval for operations of this new type of vehicle from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) earlier this year, Einride completed this industry first by operating a fully autonomous, electric vehicle without a safety driver on board on U.S. public roads. The pilot, in partnership with GE Appliances, a Haier company, took place over the duration of two weeks as the vehicle supported real-time workflows and transported finished goods from GE Appliancesโ€™ facilities.

Working in close partnership with state and county officials and GE Appliances staff, the Einride autonomous vehicle conducted the safe movement of goods between GE Appliancesโ€™ manufacturing facility and warehouse. Einride also partnered with Ericsson, who provided a private connectivity network for seamless vehicle functionality and to enable a Remote Operator to remotely monitor the vehicle. GE Appliancesโ€™ Selmer, TN facility was chosen as the pilot launch site due to the nature of the environment for safe testing of operations while meeting the real demand for movement of goods.

Resource requirement estimation, often referred to as dimensioning, is a crucial activity in the telecommunications industry. Network dimensioning is an integral part of the Ericsson Sales Process when engaging with a prospective customer โ€“ find out more about our approach to network dimensioning and the critical importance of accuracy.

The telco dimensioning problem can be conceived as a regression problem from an AI/ML perspective. The proposed solution is Bayesian Regression which proved to be more robust to multi-collinearity of features. Additionally, our approach allows the incorporation of domain knowledge into the modeling (for example, in the form of priors, bounds and constraints), to avoid dropping network features that are critical for the domain and interpretability requirements, from a modelโ€™s trustworthiness perspective.

Adopting neural language models for the telecom domain

In recent years, transformer-based language models have become the go-to approach in NLP. The transformer model itself is not restricted to the NLP domain, although that is where the architecture has found its greatest use. Similar to recurrent neural network (RNN)-based architectures, the transformer is designed to deal with sequential data. Unlike RNN-based models, however, transformers do not need to process sequential data in order. This is due to non-recurrent attention mechanisms, which replace sequential processing with matrix multiplications and therefore have the benefit of inherent parallelization and greatly reduced training times.

The potential use cases for language models within the telecom industry will grow in number if the models possess knowledge about the domain. To this end, our new benchmark, TeleQuAD, makes it possible to both adapt and evaluate models for the question answering task within the telecom domain. In future work, such benchmarks could also be developed for other downstream tasks, such as entity recognition, log-analysis, classification, and summarization. Furthermore, a telecom language model could be applied to tasks as diverse as software development and infrastructure configuration, for example, code generation, debugging, and automated documentation.

A solid network design is the foundation to deliver on stringent performance requirements associated with mission-critical railway communications and to deliver on consumer expectations, which remain unchanged regardless of being at home or sitting on a train moving at 500km/h.
